Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT EVALUATIONS AND THERAPY

What is a speech-language pathologist?

Speech-language pathologists (also called SLPs) are experts in communication and treat people with many types of communication problems.  These include problems with: speech sounds, language and literacy, and social communication.

What ages do you work with?

We primarily work with children ages 18 months - 18 years.

Can you work with my child if they get speech services at school?

Yes.  In fact, children often make faster progress when they receive speech services at school as well as privately.

Will you collaborate with my child's other therapists?

Absolutely.  We seek out opportunities to team up with school SLPs, OTs, and PTs in order to most effectively support the needs of each child.

What are the signs of:

a) a speech sound delay/disorder? - Difficulty producing sounds, words, or phrases clearly and fluently, struggling to make specific speech sounds, difficulty being understood by others.

b) a language delay/disorder? - Difficulty learning and using spoken and written language, difficulty with vocabulary, sentence structure, or having a conversation, having a hard time following directions or organizing thoughts.

How often do we come to therapy?

Typically, sessions are conducted 1-2 times per week for 30-minute or 45-minute sessions.

Can I be present for my child's session?

Yes.  You can remain in the therapy room to observe sessions and learn tips and cueing strategies, or you are welcome to stay in the waiting room and grab some water or a cup of coffee while your child is in therapy.

Do you offer free screenings?

Yes, we do offer free screenings.  This is typically done when families are unsure if their child is meeting the expected speech and language milestones.
